Tertiary College

Truro, Cornwall

Truro College was built on a sloping site at Gloweth on the edge of the town. The development form was linear with terraced parking and landscape areas.

Expansion was planned for the southern end. The need for segregated and flexible spaces suggested that we use the device of the ‘street’.

This created opportunities to envelop all major spaces under a simple profile and uses such as the Lecture Theatre, Drama Studio, Library and Social Areas can be provided in conjunction with essential, covered breathing zones. The ‘Street’ is roofed in a glazed and insulated sandwich, providing diffused light whilst conserving heat. The result is an ergonomic space that is calm and enjoyable to use.
